Account history and data gaps
Why historical insights can look incomplete, and what is and is not fixable on our end.
If you connected your account and noticed the past looks thinner than the present, this page is the explanation. Most gaps are not bugs — they are artifacts of how Meta records and retains insights over time.
Account-type history
If your Instagram account was Personal at any point, Meta returned no insights for that period. Switching back to Business or Creator does not retroactively fill the gap. The reverse is also true — going Personal → Business loses the insights from your personal stretch forever, because Meta never recorded them in the first place.
This catches almost everyone who has been on Instagram for years and only recently converted to a Business or Creator account.
Page disconnections
Instagram Business and Creator accounts attach to a Facebook Page. If the Instagram account was unlinked from that Page during a window — even briefly — that window is dark on Meta's side. Reconnecting the Page now does not refill the gap.
Meta retention windows
Some insights are only available for a rolling number of days from Meta's side. Account-level reach and impressions have their own rolling window. Per-post insights for feed content are more durable but still subject to Meta's policy.
When you connect a brand-new account, we backfill what Meta still serves at the moment of connection. If you connect today, anything Meta dropped before today is gone.
Connection gaps on our end
If our access to your account expired and you didn't reconnect for a while, daily refreshes paused. When you reconnect, we backfill what Meta still serves, but anything that fell out of Meta's retention window during the outage is unrecoverable.
What to do
Nothing technical fixes Meta's history. The point of this page is to stop you from blaming the product or assuming the data is wrong. Practical suggestions:
- Tag the gap in your own notes so future you doesn't re-investigate.
- Use the planner to mark windows where data is unreliable, so reports built later do not draw misleading conclusions from them.
- For posts inside a known-bad window, treat per-post insights as best-effort.
For which metrics are even possible per post type, see Why some metrics are missing for some posts.
